Welcome To The Jungle!!

This week’s Hillside blog is even more illuminating than usual and definitely one for readers of a more adventurous disposition.

For the past month, Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden has been opening it’s gates after dark to intrepid explorers, inviting them to enjoy the garden’s exotic array of flora and fauna in (quite literally) a new light. This year’s Botanic Lights, orchestrated by event management supremos Unique Events, allows visitors to explore the regions of the world from where many of the Garden’s plants and trees originate. As in previous years, Hillside have been on design duty - tasked with delivering an identity to accompany this year’s theme of exploration.

You can see a few examples of the work done by Team Hillside below:

We cannot stress enough that this is one of the coolest things you can do in Edinburgh at this time of year and, as predicted, tickets are selling out at light-speed. If you’re looking to indulge your adventurous side without leaving the city then head over to and start your journey.

A very happy Friday to the thousands of Hillside blog readers - we know you’re out there! The latest project off the Hillside production line is a bit of a departure from our usual work - a branding project that poked, pulled & prodded the Hillside team in a number of new and exciting directions before we landed on the final outcome.

To give you a bit of background, mapTrunk is the latest endeavour from Stirling-based GIS gurus thinkWhere. It’s a brand new product that gives users quick & easy access to a range of digital mapping services online.

From the UI design of the app itself right through to the creation of a promo video we’ve worked closely with the team at thinkWhere to give this exciting new app the personality and accessibility which we’re sure will set it miles apart from it’s competitors.

You can take our word for it or go visit and see what all the fuss is about for yourself.

Light at the inside of the tunnel

Another great outdoor event in the Scottish Borders!

The Tweed Valley first ever Tunnel Trail Run took place on the first day of October, with fantastic views, plenty of sunshine and lovely autumn colours. The running course went through mixed woodland and into hills before diving into a lit-up old railway tunnel. An exciting running event and we’re so pleased with how the branding turned out - very proud to be involved in yet another brilliant Scottish event!

Back of the (inter)net!!

We were delighted to attend the launch of Nutmeg Magazine last night, a brand new quarterly magazine offering a unique insight into the (unfortunately infrequent) highs & (unfortunately more frequent) lows of Scottish Football. Nutmeg is the latest endeavour from Edinburgh-based publishing consultants Palmer Watson and will provide a platform for both established and up-and-coming football writers in Scotland to air their views on the beautiful game.

Our contribution to the Nutmeg cause was the design and development of their website where visitors can buy single issues or choose from a variety of subscriptions. With the (beautifully designed) first issue now in the bag and interest in Scottish football on the rise, we’re sure Nutmeg is destined for the top.

Ain’t no Party like a Hogmanay Street Party

Tickets for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party went on sale this morning to partygoers around the world. Also going live was the brand new design for lovingly hand-crafted by the team at Hillside in conjunction with west coast code boffins Northcolour.

This year’s event promises another unforgettable night of music and dancing - with live bands and DJs serving up the best in alternative, traditional and party music. Add to the mix an unbeatable atmosphere and the wonderful winter setting that is Edinburgh’s city centre and you have the recipe for the world’s most unforgettable outdoor party.

Stay tuned to our blog for further updates about Scotland’s world-famous new year festival.

Let there be light!

We’re pleased to announce a new project hitting the world wide web this week as Botanic Lights launch their brand new website.

Botanic Lights is an event like no other where visitors are invited after dark to explore a one and a half kilometre trail of colour, light and installations all staged within the beautiful surrounds of The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. At visitors can get a taste of what’s to come in October and November with exclusive photo and video content from previous years’ events, and from what we’ve seen already we can’t wait to see the spectacular display that this year’s event has lined up.

A Cycling Spoketacular

The Big Bike Fest

If you’re still reading after that dreadful opening pun then firstly I’d like to thank you for sticking with us and secondly, issue a warning that there are more to come.

This weekend Bearsden & Milngavie is gear-ing up for the ‘Grand Depart’ of the inaugural Big Bike Fest, a week long event aimed at chain-ging perceptions and promoting the vast array of cycling opportunities available in the local area. With a programme chock-a-brake-block full of cycling-themed events and activities (pedal powered cinema anyone?) there’s definitely something for the cycle-ologist in everyone.

We may have already mentioned that we’re a bit cyclo-pathic here at Hillside Agency so it’s not an understatement to say that we were wheelie excited to be asked to produce the identity and website for this wonderful event.

A journey through Scot:Lands

Already six weeks have passed since Edinburgh was full of party animals welcoming in 2016!

The event Scot:Lands on New Year’s Day - the finale to three days of Hogmanay celebrations - is in true Scottish spirit!  For one afternoon only you could explore ten different venues around Edinburgh’s Old Town and experience the most amazing music, art and theatre by some of Scotland’s most innovative artists. Hillside created an imaginative map for the day, where each illustrated island corresponded to a real event taking place. Watch this short animation and join us on a wee journey through SCOT:LANDS!!

Drop and Scroll!

Another Friday is upon us and everyone at Hillside HQ is practically moonwalking with anticipation as we prepare to launch our latest web project - FYI: it’s a biggie!

A few months ago we took a call from Danny Macaskill’s (told you it was a biggie!) management team wondering if Hillside would be interested in developing a new website for Scotland’s own YouTube megastar/worldwide cycling phenomenon/[insert superlative of choice here]. As everyone at Hillside is pretty nuts about bikes (trust us, we’ve got the christmas lists to prove it) projects really don’t come much more exciting than this.

Stay tuned to the Hillside blog in the coming weeks for more insight into the creative process behind showcasing a body of work as unique and exciting as Danny’s. For now, we’re delighted to share the brand new and improved where you can check out all of Mr MacAskill’s latest videos and pictures and find out where he’ll be performing next on his Drop and Roll Tour.

We're currently working on a new website. However, you can take a peek at our temporary folio here.
